Blackheath Course

Blackheath Golf Course

Par 71
The Blackheath course opened in its current layout in 1999 and is the most picturesque golf course at Ford’s Colony Country Club. Designed by Dan Maples, Blackheath challenges players with its undulating fairways, water coming into play on 13 holes, a total of 9 doglegs and bunkers guarding every green. The best example of its beauty is found when standing on the 12th tee. Golfers look straight down to the green and water carries the entire way.

Course Rating / Slope Rating

Black Men 71.7 / 139
Blue Men 69.6 / 131Ladies 75.2 / 137
White Men 65.8 / 120Ladies 70.9 / 128
Green Men 62.0 / 112Ladies 66.2 / 112

Dan Maples created the Blackheath from an existing nine of the former Gold Course and a complete new nine holes. The result is a truly intriguing and beautiful par 71, 6,632 yard course layout. It is a golf course where upon completion of your round you can easily replay all 18 holes in your mind. Particularly memorable is the 375-yard 18th hole with water down the right, dense woods down the left, and an island green finish. The Blackheath has been rated as “one of the best 12 places to play” by Washington Golf Monthly.

Pro Tip: The opening hole is a real risk/reward opportunity. Lay up to the left of the bunkers from the tee or take a chance and hit it over the bunkers to try and reach the green in two.

Pro Tip: Drive the ball in the fairway for an easier second shot. Be careful not to go long on your approach.

Pro Tip: Lots of slope in this green from front to back. It’s best to be below the hole with your tee shot.

Pro Tip:

A long par 5. Drive the back just left of the bunker to catch the downslope and a few extra yards from the tee. Take enough club on your layup to be able to see the green for your approach shot.

Pro Tip: A drive just to the right of the fairway bunkers helps take the water out of play. The second shot is uphill so take a little extra club.

Pro Tip: The key here is to hit enough club to clear the dogleg. Take extra club for your second, uphill shot.

Pro Tip: A drive down the left side of the fairway helps get a few extra yards from the tee. Avoid the bunker on the front left of the green.

Pro Tip: An uphill par 3. Take an extra club from the tee.

Black 418 | Blue 371 | White 306 | Green 264

Pro Tip: A drive down the right center of the fairway leaves a wide open second shot. The second shot tends to play a little shorter than the yardage.

Pro Tip: An uphill par 4 that requires your drive to be left of the fairway bunker. Take an extra club up the hill for your second shot.

Pro Tip: A drive down the right side opens up the green for your second shot.

Black 182 | Blue 158 | White 128 | Green 118

Pro Tip: A downhill par 3 that seems to always play longer than the scorecard. Use enough club and avoid the bunker in front.

Black 390 | Blue 357 | White 325 | Green 291

Pro Tip: Par is a good score here. There is water over the bunker from the tee. Play to the right of the bunker and you’ll have a long, forced carry over water for your second shot.

Pro Tip: Going long on this par 3 is not an option as the tee shot plays a little longer than you expect.

Black 533 | Blue 505 | White 433 | Green 351

Pro Tip: A drive just left of the bunker is best. The lay needs to be down the right side over or short of the fairway bunker, and don’t go long on your approach.

Black 386 | Blue 368 | White 334 | Green 257

Pro Tip: A tough tee shot here, but the narrow fairway rewards you with a shorter second shot. The approach plays a little uphill so take enough club.

Pro Tip: Avoid the bunker on the right from the tee and bust one out there! The shorter the second shot the better.

Pro Tip: A drive in the fairway is a must to ensure an easier second shot to this island green. Good Luck!
